How is it not working the way it should? You can cancel the auto subscribe, but if you already have gold, don't think you can cancel the gold account.

well yeah you can cancel your subcription but you would still have however much time of gold left. Have you even called MS about your problem? You really should.
Adding friends isn't a gold benefit...The only gold benefit is playing online with other people, the occasional early download, and deals of the week.
You can call up Microsoft and cancel it there. Or if you don't have automatic billing with a credit card then just let it die and ignore it. If your trying to make a new account with that 3month of gold just do it.
